'A great step towards BAME inclusion at all levels of our business' says Sainsbury's HR Director

'A great step towards BAME inclusion at business'

Having a diverse range of colleagues is woven through the very fabric of Sainsbury’s, and we want to be the most inclusive retailer where all our colleagues can fulfil their potential. So I’m proud to announce that two of our colleagues feature in the Financial Times EMpower Top 100 Ethnic Minority Leaders List.

EMpowering our colleagues

Congratulations to Irvinder Goodhew, Director of Transformation, and Sarah Nelson, Group Financial Controller on a fantastic achievement.

EMpower is an organisation that helps companies drive greater BAME inclusion at all levels of their business.

The EMpower list exists to encourage business leaders and companies to drive forward the diversity agenda and inspire the next generation to succeed. They showcase visible, inspiring BAME role models at all levels, who are demonstrating that background or ethnicity should not and will not be a barrier to professional success.

Here at Sainsbury’s, we believe that diversity amongst our colleagues should be celebrated. Our Embrace the Difference initiative, launched last year, inspired a huge number of colleagues throughout the business to share their stories and be open and honest with one another about what makes them different. Recognising that every colleague is unique makes us stronger as a business.

Both Irvinder and Sarah have been key in driving the Sainsbury’s inclusion agenda, through bravely sharing their stories and acting as role models and mentors for many colleagues. Their involvement in our Race Reference Group has resulted in a number of initiatives aimed at helping our BAME colleagues to be the best they can be. Our BAME networking events have proved very popular, with almost 500 colleagues across our business having attended an event. We’re also building our first BAME network for colleagues and have a number of Board members starting to take on BAME mentoring circles.

“This is a great step towards BAME inclusion at all levels of our business. We know that there’s always more to be done, but being recognised by EMpower is a hugely positive step in our journey. Congratulations once more to Irvinder and Sarah, and thank you to all of the colleagues involved in helping us continue to strive for diversity and inclusion, every day."
