“Let's make this just being who you are!”

From a transgender perspective, when it comes to Diversity and Inclusion, for me, one of the most important things is how and where we get the voice to take place and be included.

When I think about my journey to being me, the real me, it began a long, long time ago. In contrast, I only became a civil servant about eight years ago.

Before that I worked in the private sector, and the private sector back then was a less friendly place to be transgender, it was almost a case of being hidden and I thought, what can I do to be a part of something that is going to be able to make a difference? So, I ended up joining the Civil Service.

The best part of around 20 years before that, I spent a long, long time being what I would call a "transgender terrorist”, I did not want to be a part of what that was, many people find being transgender a real challenge.

I’ve found that in the last five years, suddenly it has become fashionable to be transgender though is it really fashionable, or just a case of being yourself? Being a part of something in the Civil Service has allowed me that opportunity to influence and to encourage change right from the very heart of the institution that influences who we are today.

I think what we need to be able to try and get from some organisations to feel included, to feel that this is where we need to be able to be and make that real difference at the heart of an organisation.

Make it a culture!

The last five years, we have spent a lot of time in the Civil Service looking at things like individual characteristics. These days, I think the world is a very different place. It is about how we look at things collectively and how each of the protected characteristics protect each other.

One of the most important messages I want to get across is let's make this the norm, let's make this just being who you are.
