Category: Returnships (Returning to work)

flexible working

“There needs to be a balance between serving clients in the right way, developing and supporting the team, and peoples’ personal responsibilities. It is not easy to strike that balance all of the time and as a business that delivers critical advice for clients, those relationships have to be a priority.”

We interviewed Stephanie McMahon, Senior Managing Director at Teneo.  Read on to hear her discuss her career in Teneo, workplace flexibility and parenthood.

1) Hometown:
Manchester, England

2) Global office location:
London

3) Education:
BA in Commerce, Business Studies at the University of Birmingham

4) Business segment:
Restructuring

5) How long have you been with Teneo?
Since June of 2021, when Teneo acquired the Restructuring Services business of Deloitte UK.

6) What does your role entail?
Externally, I advise lenders when the clients that they have lent to are underperforming and either can’t afford/comply with the terms of their existing debt or when they need new money. Internally, my management role is leading our approach to Clients and Markets – our approach to business development in terms of brand and also work winning.

7) What do you like most about your work at Teneo?
The variety and flexibility of the work we do (never a dull day) and working with such a high quality and dynamic team.

8) How do you define a flexible workplace?
A flexible workplace, in my view, is one that appreciates that differing approaches to when and where people work is an important and accepted part of how the business operates.

9) How has COVID-19 changed your view of what a flexible workplace should be?
I already saw flexible working as key pre-pandemic, but the impact of various lockdowns has provided an opportunity to test that further.

10) What is the business case for implementing a flexible workplace?
Recognizing the need for flexibility is important not only for our team, but for our clients as well.

11) What challenges do businesses face in creating a flexible workplace?
There needs to be a balance between serving clients in the right way, developing and supporting the team, and peoples’ personal responsibilities. It is not easy to strike that balance all of the time and as a business that delivers critical advice for clients, those relationships have to be a priority.

12) How do you achieve your desired work/life balance as both an executive and a parent?
I manage my diary and time very actively – blocking out time for key activities (work and home) as well as reassessing ahead of each week and day to move or delegate activities according to priorities at that time. I also make sure I have time clear of both parenting and working to clear my head and keep the right balance. I often find that even when I am super busy, switching off for an evening and getting a good night's sleep means I can tackle things quicker and more creatively/effectively the next morning.

13) What changes should businesses make to help parents achieve a better work/life balance?
Demonstrating a commitment to flexible working is important, but more important is having open discussions between team members and their coach/manager as life is never predictable.

14) What changes would you like to see implemented in workplace culture before your children enter the workforce?
Achieving increased diversity in all forms so that the workplace reflects the world that she lives in. This diversity should be a given, not a focus for change.

15) What trends are you following, and why?
I'm following the global transformation or dislocation of certain industries. The impact of Covid has only added to existing and increasing challenges that will require significant investment over coming years.

16) What inspires you about your work?
Driving solutions to support clients at intense points of stress.

17) What advice would you give your younger self?
Always make sure you take the time to step back and think about what you are doing and why.

18) What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
Exploring the countryside and the Alps (although not been for a while now) by both walking and skiing with my husband, daughter and friends.

19) What's a fun fact about you that your coworkers may not know?
I am obsessed with Christmas and always have our house lit up during the seasion. A new addition for last year is our skiing reindeer.

20) Do you have a favourite book, movie, or TV show at the moment?
I am completely addicted to Strictly Come Dancing and I’m a Celebrity.
