5 mistakes students make at every interview

Image of Hints and Tips

Just left university? Got an important job interview lined-up? Hold on there - here's 5 common mistakes you need to avoid in your interview.

1. Waffling. Most students aren't well-practiced at interviews, and it shows. When asked a question about leadership or competence, you need to stay relevant and give evidence. The CAR technique is a simple 3 step process for doing this.

2. Lacking enthusiasm. Marketing isn't as exciting as debating The Communist Manifesto, but that doesn't mean you should make that known to your interviewer. Every interviewer is looking for enthusiasm and drive, so you'll need to demonstrate that you're excited about the role. Be bright, energetic and engaged in your interview. Make sure your voice isn’t too monotone.

3. Not doing your research. Interviews are competitive, and to stand out you’ll need to do your research on the company. Go to the interview knowing what the company does and its goals. If you really want to stand out, show some commercial awareness.

4. Struggling with demonstrating capabilities. You’re likely to have little work experience, so questions like “give me an example of where you’ve excelled at something” are going to send shivers down your spine. But this is your chance to give examples from your life, not just your work. Come prepared with examples of things you’re proud of; whether it’s sporting achievements or organising events.

5. Ending the interview awkwardly. Interview etiquette differs between interviewers, but you need to make sure you end on a positive note. Thank the interviewer for their time, and reiterate how excited you are about the role.
