Have you heard these three things about working for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)?

Category: Home & Flexible Working

Department for Culture, Media & Sport

DCMS is there in the big moments of national life that bring us together. Cheering on our athletes to gold, the silent reflection of Remembrance Sunday. Its work exists in the community spirit of local charity volunteers.

The people who work at DCMS are not your stereotypical civil servants. They are inspired by and drawn from the creative, cultural and technology sectors. The workplace culture is diverse and welcoming. It embraces fresh thinking and ideas.

1) Flexible working. Flexible working can increase motivation, promote work-life balance, reduce stress and improve wellbeing, performance and productivity.

Once you join DCMS you can request flexible working arrangements within your contracted hours through your Line Manager. DCMS offers a number of options to help you achieve a good work life balance, including:

  • Flexi hours
  • Part-time and job share
  • Compressed hours

The department has a flexible working and job share network, to champion flexible working in DCMS.

2) The award-winning Summer diversity programme gives people from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to see what a job in the civil service is like. It puts talented undergraduates and graduates on a work placement in a government department.

This is an excellent way to prepare for a civil service fast stream programme. This could lead to many different career paths at the heart of the UK Government. Inclusion in DCMS is supported by its BME network. The network coordinates and delivers activity to mark events and promote diversity across the department.

3) Staff members at DCMS are given five days a year to develop their career through learning. DCMS offers the Civil Service Learning curriculum to support civil servants to learn in a way that suits them. Anything that helps them do their job counts. It could be a challenging piece of work, e-learning, shadowing, seminars, workshops and Lunch & Learns. And of course, formal studies count too.

As well as on-the-job training support, relevant courses and subscriptions, the department has a number of other opportunities to enable staff training. These include:

  • DCMS Academy, which has created a curriculum of in-house bitesize learning to improve knowledge and skills
  • The Civil Service Learning (CSL) offers a mix of different types of learning. This means civil servants can learn in a way that works for them.
  • Fast Track Apprenticeship. This is a two-year Level 4 apprenticeship that offers a rewarding alternative to university with a competitive starting salary.
