20162017 WISE Young Women's Board Members L

The WISE Young Women's Board this year is made up of 11 exceptional young women working in STEM aged under 30, they support our members to be successful as they progress in the STEM workforce and navigate through their early careers. The Board members are successful young role models in their industries, poised to bring their expertise to an ever changing workplace, and with technology creating new ways to network and grow professionally in comparison to 30 years ago, WYWB members are a great asset to the WISE campaign, informing strategy and providing insight.

Elaine Dalgarno

Elaine Dalgarno, Structural Engineer at Atkins working in the Offshore Oil and Gas industry - WISE Young Women's Board 2015/16 commented:

"I am passionate about my career in STEM and sharing it with others, I want to encourage as many young people as I can into a career which I believe can take them anywhere they want!

"I have been working with Atkins as a Structural Engineer for 3 years and currently work in the Offshore Oil and Gas industry. In my role, I look after ageing North Sea platforms and make sure that the structure is safe for the people to work on. This means that I get to go offshore and visit these platforms to check the condition of the steelwork.

"I enjoy going into schools and talking about different careers available in engineering, I have been involved in Bridges to Schools, Rapid Response Engineering Challenge, Offshore Europe and careers fairs which promote engineering to primary and secondary aged school children. I enjoy these events as it gives me a chance to talk to others about why I chose my career and how much I enjoy it. I am also a Brownie Guider and look after a network of girls aged 7-11 with whom I often promote STEM subjects. I believe that engaging with young people and presenting the fun side of STEM subjects can help to get them thinking about possible career options.

"I am an outgoing and approachable person, and am highly enthusiastic about my career. I really enjoy talking about what I do and being able to give something back to try to encourage the next generation to follow in my footsteps."

Narmeen Rehman

Narmeen Rehman, Fuel Route Engineer, EDF Energy - WISE Young Womens Board 2016/17 commented:

"From a young age, I knew that I wanted to be a scientist and contribute to developing something worthwhile for society. I went to a comprehensive school, where unfortunately there was no emphasis on STEM subjects and in fact Chemistry GCSE hadn’t even been scheduled into our timetable. Against all odds, I was determined to pursue Science and I worked hard to overcome obstacles to achieve my goals and would similarly like to inspire others through actively supporting the WISE campaign.

"I am fortunate to have a supportive Mum, who encouraged me to pursue my dreams, which led me to eventually read Engineering Science at Oxford University and become a Mechanical Engineer.

"At University, I became more interested in sustainability and wanted to contribute to solving the UK energy crisis. This led me to work at EDF Energy, where I have been working for over 4 years. I have had the opportunity to experience work on power stations and also the Engineering technical centre, where I have worked in Structural Integrity and more recently in Fuel Route Systems.

"As a member of the WISE Young Women’s Board, I am excited to share my knowledge and personal experience from working as a female Engineer in the nuclear energy industry. I would like to support WISE and help change common misconceptions surrounding STEM careers. I have regularly volunteered for STEM projects and often been the sole female representative. I hope to use my positive attitude to raise awareness of the variety of opportunities and also the satisfaction and fulfilment it can offer.

"I feel strongly about empowering women and all young people to pursue their dreams in STEM areas and particularly want to support women in the UK, where I feel that Engineering perhaps has more negative connotations associated with it than elsewhere."
