10 reasons to work for BT Openreach

There’s more to Openreach than meets the eye. We’re an incredibly well connected and supported network of people with a strong sense of community and customer service.

So with that in mind, here are 10 things you probably don't know about Openreach; but should:

Get connected

  1. Trainee Engineers

We offer Trainee Engineer opportunities. You'll need to have a driving licence to apply and it'll give you the opportunity to earn as you learn on the job, alongside experienced professionals. We offer a competitive starting salary and pay for all your training. Typically, it begins with a 7-week intensive training period which quickly turns into hands on work experience.

  1. Graduate Opportunities

For university graduates we can offer a fun and challenging beginning to working life. Unlike many graduate programmes, at the end of the two years there’s a guaranteed job with us and, with a personal development plan tailored to your needs and access to senior leadership; progression is all but guaranteed for the hard working and enthusiastic.Image of a black male openreach employee setting up a TV

  1. Accelerated Leadership

Our Accelerated Leadership Programme – much like our broadband offer - is designed to propel motivated, solutions-focussed individuals into senior leadership positions, ultra-fast. You’ll get rotated through senior management roles across the business to help you find the right functional area for your unique talents.

  1. Support Networks – bringing people together

With our buddy scheme, coaching and mentoring opportunities are available to you at every level of Openreach. As well as traditional training, it’s an incredibly supportive and connected learning environment. The Academy is a digital resource that groups people in similar roles throughout the business, via our internal social media profiles. It enables knowledge sharing, best practice and gives each of us access to a wide range of specialist skills. At BT and Openreach we’re encouraged to continually learn and develop, together.

  1. Award-winning

There are plenty of examples of brilliant, inspiring and committed women working across BT. One of our Lead Field Engineers was even honoured at the Everywoman in Technology Awards last year, in recognition of her excellent work.

  1. Leading from STEM

BT STEM Crew is a new digital education programme for 11-16 year olds. Here at Openreach, we actively encourage young women to enter into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) careers, providing them with an abundance of opportunities for career progression and learning at BT.

  1. Community Outreach

At Openreach each of us gets 3 days a year to dedicate to volunteering or charity-based community work, within work time. Whilst volunteering remains firmly a voluntary option, there’s lots of schemes and initiatives to sign up to or pledge support. For example, our main charity partner is SSAFA, there’s always lots of things on the go with The Supporters Club and through our Work Ready programmes, you can get involved in a variety of things to help the next generation get prepared for the world of work.

  1. Customer-focus

Customer experience is championed at every level of Openreach. Our team of new Twitter customer service representatives are all ex-engineers who have been trained to use their technical knowledge to deliver customer satisfaction.

  1. Virtual Reality

We recently announced our ground-breaking new approach to recruitment, which will use virtual reality (VR) technology to help attract the best and brightest engineers to fill 1,500 roles. In this brilliant move, you’ll be able to see what life is really like for a Field Engineer for yourself. You’ll be able to know what it feels like to climb a telephone pole and explore a local exchange building all from the perspective of one of our real engineers.

  1. Benefits and rewards

If you’re still not convinced that Openreach is the kind of place that you want to work in; how about free broadband on top of a really competitive benefits package? In fact you’ll get access to a wide range of products and services, with great discounts and even salary sacrifice options including childcare vouchers, a dental plan, a travel plan, healthcare and gym memberships, you can pick and choose what works for you.
