Bio Blitz with WWF-UK

Birds, bees and beautiful nature – our people have Bio Blitzed their way to identifying more than 1,000 of nature’s species.

Bio Blitz is WWF-UK backed activity focusing on finding and identifying species in nature. The research then informs decisions to restore Our Wild Isles.

And moments like this support our campaign for the UK to be the most Climate Ready large economy by 2030.

Aviva people Bio Blitzing their way to identifying more than 1,000 of nature’s species.

Here’s how it went…

  • 10,734 Observations
  • 1,108 Separate Species Identified
  • 39% of observations classified as ‘research grade’ and will be added to national biodiversity databases
Save Our Wild Isles: The Business of Nature

Fantastic to be joined by Deborah Meaden to raise employee awareness about the nature crisis and what this means for businesses like Aviva - and actions we can all take to help within work and at home.

Deborah was joined by Steve Waygood, Aviva Investors Chief Responsible Investment Officer, who also appeared in the films, and Rhiannon Shah from WWF UK. And the event was hosted by our very own Peter Marshall

As inspiration for the talk, we watched ‘Save Our Wild Isles: The Business of Nature’ – one of four new business films Co-produced by WWF-UK, RSPB, National Trust & SILVERBACK FILMS, inspired by BBC's Wild Isles

Deborah was joined by Steve Waygood, Aviva Investors Chief Responsible Investment Officer, who also appeared in the films, and Rhiannon Shah from WWF UK. And the event was hosted by our very own Peter Marshall

The panel took some great questions from our people around why these films are vital education on the devastating impact that business-as-usual is having on our natural world. And how we as a business have a key role in paving the way in making the UK the most #ClimateReady large economy in the world by 2023.

Thanks to Deborah, Steve and Rhiannon for what was a great event.

World Wildlife Day: 3rd March

It’s World Wild life Day 2023. One of the ways we’re supporting nature is through our partnership with The Woodland Trust.

Part of our £10m donation will go towards woodland creation projects which support the under threat red squirrels and also preserving pingo ponds which provide habitat for the super-rare northern pool frog.

Aviva Building Future Communities report

At the start of 2023 we’ve reaffirmed our commitment to sustainability by extending our renewable energy insurance offering into the growing offshore wind market. This will:

  • help achieve our ambition of becoming #NetZero by 2040
  • support our commitment to help UK to become the most #climateready large economy by 2030.

Offshore wind adds to our renewable energy portfolio which includes; onshore wind, solar power, EV charging points and battery energy storage systems. It is now more than 200% of the size of the fossil fuel book we exited, covering enough renewable energy to offset 31.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually, the carbon equivalent of driving 96bn miles.

And as a leading provider of insurance for renewable energy, this will drive our ambition to become the number one insurer of renewable energy in the UK by 2027.

Adam Winslow, CEO of Aviva UK & Ireland General Insurance, said: “Aviva has a strong reputation as a lead insurer in onshore renewables and we know there is strong demand in offshore as we see this market rapidly evolve.

“With more offshore wind projects coming on-stream all the time and many others in the planning, development and construction phases, this is a growth area and we look forward to bringing our expertise and experience to bear in this exciting space.”

Climate Ready Index

We can all take  Climate Action. That’s why we’ve launched our first ever Climate Ready Index.

‘Climate-Ready’ means reducing our carbon emissions to limit further damage to the climate and adapting how we live and work.

Through the index, we’re measuring how influential countries stack up with each other on climate mitigation, resilience and adaptation.

It takes building a more sustainable future

– for our people and our planet

What makes a community? It’s the people. People who care. People with ideas. People who take the time to look out for one another and look after the places in which they live.

By getting behind small charities and community causes that are taking action in the face of climate change and helping people to take control of their financial wellbeing, we’re building stronger, more supportive communities all across the UK.

The causes we’ve seen make the biggest impact are those that have the freedom to test innovative ideas and explore exciting new opportunities without fear of risk. Ideas like recycling ocean plastic or breaking down barriers to work. That’s why the Aviva Community Fund puts its weight behind these kind of clever ideas through funding, coaching, volunteering and practical guidance.

The causes we're passionate about

We open the door to communities and causes all over the UK to share their vision on how to make our world a better place. Our eyes are currently fixed on these two areas:

Climate action– promoting healthy, thriving communities by preventing, preparing for and protecting against the impacts of climate change

Financial wellbeing– helping people take control of their wellbeing by giving them the tools to be more financially independent and ready for anything.

Aviva’s Sustainability Ambition: Creating a Better Tomorrow

We’re celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Climate Group's EV100 - a global initiative that is leading the way in making electric transport the new normal by 2030 which we’re proud to be a member of.

We’ve committed to having our fleet vehicles, across core markets, electric or plug-in hybrid by 2025.

And 10% of onsite parking spaces across our core markets will be for EVs.

Here, Property Claims Manager, Tracey, who has an electric company vehicle to visit customers who need our support, talks about their benefits.

“I really like driving an electric car -  it was certainly a nice place to be when queues were huge, and fuel prices increased! “I really enjoy doing my bit for the environment - I know it’s only a small step, but if all of us take the small step together that makes a huge difference to climate change! We all have a responsibility to do our bit! “They’re great, really quiet, and a comfortable drive!”

For Cycle To Work Day we’re featuring our wonderful colleague Joanne.

Joanne made the most of our Cycle2Work benefit and got herself an amazing hybrid e-bike.

‘I had never considered choosing the Cycle2Work option as part of my benefits. I saw that it was affordable and was even able to choose a hybrid e-bike and get free safety accessories. I’m not a cyclist at all, so I needed the power assist mode on a bike to get me up those hills.’

Aviva are pleased to be a part of the UK Transition Plan Taskforce. Co-chaired by our Group CEO Amanda Blanc, it will look to develop a framework for corporate net zero transition plans. This is vitally important if we want to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. And we’ll be leading the way as we all move towards net zero.

We’re pleased to share that our Group CEO Amanda Blanc has been appointed as WWF-UK's newest Ambassador

We’re pleased to share that our Group CEO Amanda Blanc has been appointed as WWF-UK's newest Ambassador for her commitment to tackling climate change and for prioritising the protection and restoration of nature.

Under Amanda’s leadership, in 2021, Aviva was the first major insurer to target net zero by 2040. She is also Co-Chair of the Government’s Transition Plan Taskforce and the HM Treasury’s Women in Finance Charter Champion.

Aviva has been a recognised leader on sustainability issues for decades. We have now taken the next step in fulfilling our purpose to be with people today for a better tomorrow.

Sustainability is a fundamental part of Aviva’s strategy and integral to what we do as a business.

We spoke with over 9,000 people: our customers, investors, intermediaries, employees and other organisations we work with, to understand how we can make the biggest impact. What they told us led to our sustainability ambition, which sets out our commitment to create a brighter future.

This is focused on three core areas – acting on climate change, building stronger, more resilient communities and embedding sustainability in our business.

It is complemented by clear governance and decision-making, transparent reporting and by proactively engaging our stakeholders.

Acting on climate change

Aviva is taking bold steps to tackle the climate crisis. Our plan is to:

  • Become a Net Zero company by 2040
  • Achieve a 25% reduction in carbon intensity of assets by 2025, and 60% by 2030
  • Have Net Zero operations and supply chain by 2030

It’s on all of us to tackle climate change together.

We have our own goal to be a Net Zero company by 2040.  Our people are also doing what they can to take action on climate change.
