Colleague stories:

Chardonnany Wilson, CTM, Food Services

“Currently I’m doing a Leven 4 Management apprenticeship! Personally, I’ve always loved the challenge of learning new things and putting that into practice. Coming from university when I joined Sainsbury’s I thought my ‘formal leaning’ had ended, however, when the chance of doing the apprenticeship came around, I thought it would be a fantastic chance to challenge myself o do more within my roll.

What I’ve learned over the past year has really helped me develop as a manager as it’s made me think outside the box. Currently I have gained a promotion to a higher level of management, and I believe the apprenticeship has helped me do that. The modules I’ve completed have been laid out really well and it’s got a really nice balance of formal and practical learning because you tailor it how much you want to do. It is hard and does require commitment and organisation to get the most out of it and at times can feel like a lot, but my trainer and manager have always made adjustments so that I can keep up with the work.

What I love is that there is such a wide array of courses to pick from that there is something for everyone looking to do an apprenticeship to pick what will have a really positive impact on the role they perform in store. I can’t wait to finish my apprenticeship, gain my qualification and start the next level up when I’m ready. It’s been such a great opportunity to broaden my thinking and challenge myself to be better!”

Jack Sheehan, Apprentice Network Engineer Walsgrave

“Completing my Network Engineering Apprenticeship in a company, the size of Sainsbury’s has given me fantastic exposure to various technologies, processes and people. I have had the opportunity to partake in large scale projects and support vital business systems along the way.

As a keen IT hobbyist, I was looking for a way to start my career in the IT sector. Having spent almost a year exploring different ideas and routes, I came across the opportunity here at Sainsbury’s to work in the Network Services team. I had the chance to gain unparalleled market knowledge while also working towards multiple vendor qualifications.

Learning on the job reflected my learning style perfectly. No doubt there is lots to learn, and at the beginning, it can seem very overwhelming, but over time I gained more and more confidence. By the end of the apprenticeship, I was leading tasks and offering guidance to others in the business across the different teams. You learn skills bot useful at work and also outside of work.

I would strongly recommend the apprenticeship path in IT over the conventional degree route as for me this offers more job-specific skills the employees want. Adding practicality to theoretical knowledge has armed me with a robust skillset I can use in my IC career both now and in the future.”
