Pride Network at Hays

Hays Pride Network

The Hays Pride Network is a staff community designed to represent and support LGBTQ+ professionals throughout their careers with us. It champions Hays' values and supports a workplace culture where people can be confident that their voices will be heard and their opinions respected.

We know people from all backgrounds who feel they can be themselves in the workplace will flourish and be more productive. In an organisation that is based on building strong relationships with candidates and clients, it’s even more important employees feel able to be their authentic selves.

In 2020 we ran our first UK&I Q&A session with our Pride Network on the importance of importance of being an ally. You can also watch out video on ‘What makes someone an LGBTQ+ Ally?’ here

As part of the first ever Hays inter-country Pride Network event, our Pride Network Chair interviewed our Hays CEO Alistair Cox who discussed his thoughts on why organisations around the world are waking up to the ED&I agenda, and how we can achieve our goals in being a globally equal, diverse and inclusive organisation.

To acknowledge Transgender Awareness Week, we also interviewed one of our clients who shared why she believes it's important to recognise Transgender Awareness Week and her experiences in transitioning.

Please also take time to read our ‘Time to support celebrate and stand together’ blog by our UK&I Managing Director, Simon Winfield.

What's your job at Hays?

“I have been at Hays for 17 years and I'm currently an Ops Director for Birmingham and Perm Lead for the Midlands Region. I run the exciting IT and Digital Technology divisions alongside Policy and Strategy. “

Why did you want to be a regional rep for Hays Pride Network?

“I'm involved in many external networks, not exclusively LGBTQ+, but I could see the importance of having an internal network to support our own staff and help Hays attract the very best LGBTQ+ talent. I wanted to be heavily involved in the set-up and running of the Pride network for a number of reasons. Firstly, I had experience doing this with the Alliance Network. Secondly, I wanted to make sure it's used as a selling tool to engage customers and thirdly, to be the go-to network for LGBTQ+ staff who need support and guidance. “

Why do you think LGBTQ+ inclusion is important at Hays?

“Inclusion is so important in a company the size of Hays. It's about knowing you can bring as much of yourself to work as you are comfortable with and being able to do your job on a day-to-day basis in a safe and secure environment where your ideas are valued and listened to. Hays needs a highly engaged, productive and diverse workforce that mirrors our customer base. There are many examples of tenders coming through the business where there is a significant weighting towards our approach to D&I and how inclusive we are. By being inclusive, we will increase the amount of business we win, improve customer engagement as well as attract the best consultants to come and work for us.”

What's your job at Hays?

“I'm a Business Director and manage the soft services facilities management team in the London Victoria C&P office. I have been at Hays eight years and have a team of eight consultants, temp and perm.”

Why did you want to be a regional rep for Hays Pride Network?

“I wanted to be the regional rep for the Network as it is a matter close to my heart. I want to act as a role model for new members joining Hays that want to be themselves and be fully supported in the company they work for.”

Why do you think LGBTQ+ inclusion is important at Hays?

“I think LGBTQ+ and inclusion is important in our day-to-day role because people perform better when they can be themselves. It can also make us identify and relate to more of our clients and show that we can reach and support all of our market.”

What's your role at Hays?

“I’m a consultant within the Procurement and Supply Chain team in Manchester - I’ve been with Hays since June 2018.”

Why did you sign up to become a Pride network member?

“I am so glad to have joined. Being gay is something which I am not ashamed of, and I wanted to join a community of others who feel the same way.“

Why do you think it’s important to have a network?

“It creates a safe and comfortable space for people to be who they truly are and connect with others in a similar situation. I think at times, being gay (or any other of the LGBTQ+ profiles) can sometimes make you feel isolated, uncomfortable or perhaps even scared. Having a pride network reminds you that you’re never alone and you should never be ashamed of who you are. Be bold, be loud, be proud! 😊

What’s your experience being LGBTQ+ at Hays?

I feel so fortunate to work for a company like Hays where we have such an inclusive and accepting culture and network of colleagues around us. For me, being gay doesn’t carry any bearing or discomfort on my shoulders at work, and that’s exactly how it should be. Everyone at Hays has been amazing and so welcoming and I think the involvement that Hays have with the LGBTQ+ community externally is inspiring.”
