DMU Disabled Staff and Allies Group

Disabled Staff and Allies Group

“Sometimes you can feel like you are the only disabled person that works at DMU. Attending the DSAG has provided me with a support network that makes it easier for me to approach departments in the university and to ask them to make changes to their policies or practices that make my working day more accessible. Sometimes it is the small things that make a big difference, such as the difficulties I used to have when getting out of the car when it was icy in the car park. DMU now grit around all accessible car parking bays in icy weather.”

The Disabled Staff and Allies Network Group (DSAG) is for all staff who define themselves as disabled and allies, whether you have disclosed this or not. The group is here to support you as a disabled member of staff and to make sure your voice is heard.

As a staff group, we recognise the unique contribution and experiences that disabled employees bring. The staff group exists to:

  • Ensure the university considers disability at all levels of its work
  • Provide a forum for consultation and discussion about staff disability issues
  • Provide advice to staff about individual concerns

By attending, you’ll be able to learn about initiatives that could affect your work or working environment, and make your voice heard on any issues you feel need addressing.

Since 2009, the DSAG has contributed to a number of campaigns and policies at DMU that have an impact on disabled staff, including:

  • ITMS prioritising calls from disabled staff in cases where the fault affects their ability to do their work due to their disability
  • The location of hearing loops now being catalogued and information being available for staff on how to access them
  • Coat/bag hooks being installed in all accessible toilets
  • Seven sets of doors being identified as needing automation and the completion of the work
  • Providing feedback on the implementation of DMU’s attendance management policy

How to get involved

Whether you have disclosed a disability or not (see below), if you self-identify as a disabled member of staff or idenfity as an ally of disabled staff, you are welcome to join us at our meetings.

Meetings take place approximately every three months.  DMU encourages involvement in the staff network groups and grants staff the time to attend the meetings.

To receive notifications about the dates and times of our meetings, please contact us on [email protected]

Disclosure

You may not feel it is necessary to disclose your disability. However, in the DSAG we encourage disclosure, as we feel that having this data helps the university to continually re-examine and improve its diversity policies and accessibility provision, to the benefit of DMU’s staff, students and visitors.

It also means that, with sufficient data, the university can be proactive and put in place positive action programmes to support staff in their learning and development and career aspirations.

If you would like to discuss this before making a decision about disclosure, please email us at [email protected].
