From Level 1 to Level 6 British Sign Language
On course completion, from the level one you’ll have the ability to sign basic home and leisure-related topics, along with other aspects of day-to-day life such as time, opinions, transport and directions. At the end of Level 2, you’ll have the opportunity to learn sign language incorporated within stories, as a practical method of teaching everyday conversations. At Level 3 you will enable development in functional BSL communication in more depth and develop an awareness of cultural interaction with Deaf people who use BSL. At Level 4, you will explore linguistics in British Sign Language. At level 6, in order to communicate with Deaf people at an extended level which you will be able to understand and use complex BSL in a range of work and social situations.
Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting Studies
This course is open to staff once they hold a Level 6 qualification in British Sign Language. You will be able to register as Trainee Sign Language Interpreter (TSLI) upon successful completion of the first year of the course. The second year of the course will then develop your skills towards the Level 6 qualification in BSL/English Interpreting, which will allow you to register with the NRCPD as a Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI).
Deaf Awareness Training
In the UK one in six people have some degree of hearing loss. This training provides basic knowledge of communication issues affecting deaf and the programme agenda is:
