Our Ethnic Diversity Network Group RADIO (Raising Awareness Diversity Inclusion of Origins) works to create a supportive working environment for all ethnically diverse groups within KFC.
Here's the heritage story of our very own Dayo Akinlabi, Regional Head of Supply Chain, co-lead of RADIO, and proud Nigerian.
"I was born in Iwo State, Nigeria and my parents lived there for a couple of years before we moved to Ibadan, the third-largest city by population in Nigeria, after Lagos and Kano. Both my parents are first-generation immigrants.
I spent most of my young teenage years growing up in Woolwich, Southeast London. Even though I was growing up with a western orientated view, my parents wanted to make sure I remained grounded to some aspects of my heritage.
From making sure I learned how to speak Yoruba, to watching Nollywood movies, going to church, listening to Afro beats and eating Jollof rice! I LOVED eating, my mum often thought I hung around the kitchen to help, but truthfully, I just wanted to score extra portions.
Growing up, I’ve always been surrounded by family, whether that be immediate family, friends, neighbours, or strangers coming together to create a community. As an outsider coming into a new country/area/school, having a community to lean into played a huge role in making me feel welcome. It gave me a sense of belonging, a place where I felt welcomed.
Now, I find myself in the same position as my parents all those many years ago. As a father to a wonderful daughter born into and growing up in a western world, I feel it’s important that she’s aware of her own cultural heritage as she makes her way in this world, defining her own identity."
