LGBTQ+ at Northumbria University

The Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality Project was launched in the summer term, as a sub-strand of the work of the LGBTQ+ Equality Steering Group. Using the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index criteria and framework, lead people have been identified to take forward each of the eight focus areas, taking an action plan approach to LGBTQ+ equality addressing areas which include Employee Lifecycle, Leadership Development, LGBTQ* Network and Supply Chains.

Throughout the year a range of learning opportunities are available for colleagues, including guest speakers, student-delivered sessions around trans inclusion and trans allyship sessions developed and delivered by one of the LGBTQ* Network Co-Chairs.

The LGBTQ* Network regularly meets for socials and pride/LGBTQ+ events, including the Annual Pride Breakfast in collaboration with the Students’ Union. The Network is also involved in events for non-LGBTQ+ colleagues which aim to raise awareness of issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community, and in 2023 established a LGBTQ+ Networks Regional Conference which was attended by the five regional Universities in the North East of England.
