Faith & Belief Forum at DIO

Recognising, acknowledging, and accepting the importance of faith, religion and belief, even if it is not important to individuals directly, is a key element of an inclusive workplace.  DIO's ambition is to become a truly faith-friendly organisation, going beyond minimum legal requirements in proactively welcoming and championing the business benefits of appropriate displays of faith and belief in the workplace.

The DIO Faith and Belief Forum aims to connect, equip, inspire and support colleagues across the organisation to be the very best they can be at work. It seeks to aid fellowship between colleagues of all faiths and belief in DIO, encouraging and enabling staff to 'bring their whole self to work. Inter Faith Week in November is a key period for the Forum when they hold events and raise awareness of the diverse backgrounds of DIO colleagues and what they bring to the organisation. The DIO Faith and Beliefs Champion is a key player in this forum’s activities.

Ramadan Coffee Chat - Supporting our people during a month of spiritual reflection, self-improvement and worship

All colleagues were invited to join a Ramadan Coffee Chat on 21 March, this event hosted by the DIO Faith and Belief Forum featured a Muslim colleague sharing their lived experience. The chat included previous experiences of our Muslim colleague and how he is supported by his colleagues during Ramadan, as well as busting some common myths, and answering questions from colleagues.

In 2023 Ramadan a month of spiritual reflection, self-improvement and worship began on or around 22 March and end on or around 21 Apr 2023 (Eid), this is the holiest month of the year for our Muslim colleagues during which they draw closer to God, known as 'taqwa' in Arabic. Taqwa is achieved through an increase in prayers, reading the Qur’an and an increase charitable activities, amongst other actions. Ramadan is also the month to observe fasting one of the five pillars of Islam otherwise known as ‘sawm’.

References to the Ramadan guidance for the Civil Service published by the Civil Service Muslim Network and the respective Defence Instruction and Notice were also provided to support colleagues.
