The hidden side of climate change

Women living in poverty around the world are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This was just one of the hidden sides to climate change revealed in our recent event for Aviva colleagues.

Aviva's Paddy Arber was joined by experts Isabella O'Dowd from WWF-UK and Bronwyn Claire from Ortec Finance to discuss how climate change is having a bigger effect on already vulnerable people across the world.

Have you heard of the Aviva Foundation?

It’s a registered charity independent of Aviva that uses unclaimed assets to support organisations which help people become more financially secure.

Take a look at the Aviva Foundation Impact Summary to find out about the partners it supported and how many people they helped in 2022.

Donation of furniture and IT equipment

Great to be able to donate excess furniture and IT equipment to Norfolk based youth charity, MAP. The charity provides advice, counselling and support to young people aged between 11 and 25 in a way that works for them.

The furniture has transformed their offices into modern, professional workspaces.

Jason Fletcher, Facilities Officer, MAP, said: “The impact of this activity upon MAP as a charity, for MAP employees and for the young people we support has been simply amazing. This absolutely hits the mark in terms of supporting the community and being there for people and charities when they’re most in need.”

As well as the donation to MAP, furniture and equipment has also been donated to local charities and schools.

The Good Shopping Guide

Very pleased to have been awarded Ethical Accreditation for a third year running by The Good Shopping Guide.

Aviva awarded Ethical Accreditation for an impressive third year running!

Insurance is not something people get excited about, but it is an essential asset for most of us, whether it be for personal or business use. More and more consumers look for insurance companies that prioritise sustainability and ethical practices. Aviva is leading the charge, achieving The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Accreditation for an impressive third-year running!

In particular, Aviva is addressing its Scope 3 emissions, which make up a large proportion of its overall carbon footprint, by investing in renewable energy and transitioning its investment portfolio to align with a New Zero pathway. It is also encouraging its investee companies to reduce their own emissions as well as improving their sustainability practices, therefore facilitating their progress in contributing towards a greener economy. As a result of its hard work, Aviva received a top rating for our Carbon Disclosure and Reduction targets criterion.

Volunteering with colleagues up on the North Norfolk coast

Aviva colleagues up on the North Norfolk coast supporting the NORFOLK RIVERS TRUST and WWF-UK with a flood resilience project

"I had a great day volunteering with colleagues up on the North Norfolk coast supporting the NORFOLK RIVERS TRUST and WWF-UK with a flood resilience project. We cleared out dead vegetation and planted 367 new trees which will provide an additional barrier alongside the existing flood measures, while also creating a new environment for local species to thrive in.”

From one of our volunteers, Steve Whitelock.

The Felix Project

Well done to our Individual Protection Development Managers for their incredible work with The Felix Project, who collect fresh and nutritious food that cannot be sold from the food industry and redistribute it to charities and schools, so they can provide healthy meals and help the most vulnerable in our society.

Spotlight on Volunteering at Aviva

A team of keen cyclists used their volunteering days to embark on an epic challenge through the Welsh Hills!

Over the last 7 or so years, our colleagues have ridden the length and breadth of the country from Perth to Sheffield, York, Norwich and last year Lands End to Sheffield.

They've so far raised nearly £3,000 for Cancer Research UK (CRUK).

Well done to the team on completing this challenge during the recent heat waves

Huge thanks to the Aviva Broker UK team for their efforts at Break Charity's Nelson Lodge - a short break children's residential home - where they helped transform the garden and outside play area for the summer.

The children were so thrilled with the results that they insisted on having their tea out there - high praise indeed!

We’re delighted to announce our new Pennies for Good charities are:

✅ Mind
✅ Blue Marine Foundation
✅ Shelter UK

Through Pennies for Good, our people have the opportunity to donate the pennies from their salary each month. Their salary (after deductions) is rounded down to the nearest whole pound and the remaining pennies are donated to three charities.

Over the last 12 months it raised £24,000, which went to Bumblebee Conservation TrustCancer Research UK (CRUK) and Crisis. Here’s how the contributions have helped Crisis:

‘Homelessness is on the rise. The cost of living crisis in combination with pandemic protections ending, will push even more people into homelessness. The money raised from Aviva employees, will help us support thousands of people out of homelessness across England, Wales and Scotland. Thank you to everyone at Aviva who has been supporting Crisis over the last 12 months.’ – Richard Lee, Director of Fundraising.

Thank you to all of the amazing interns that have joined us this summer - 2022

We welcomed over 50 A level and university students across our offices throughout the UK. Students worked on a variety of projects supporting their business units whilst also brushing up on soft skills with Aviva experts like CV writing and interview masterclasses.

We welcomed over 50 A level and university students across our offices throughout the UK

This is one of our core internship programmes, in collaboration with our charity partners Career Ready, who are focused on helping students from diverse backgrounds find the right career path. We know we won’t only benefit as a business from their individual energy, ideas, and talents. But by playing our part in helping them become the next generation of leaders, we’re creating a better society too.

Tia Trought, an A level student from North London, has been supporting our Distribution team for the last four weeks. She said:

“I’ve had such an amazing experience – I’d definitely encourage anyone thinking about an internship to apply. I felt like I’ve really made a difference in the projects I’ve been working on and I even got to give a presentation to the head of my function.

The programme has helped me build my confidence and has been a great experience with a really supportive team.”

It’s been great to host so many students, and who knows, we might see some of you again on one of our Apprenticeship or Graduate schemes in the near future!

Speakers for Schools

We are proud to welcome Speakers for Schools to share our space so they can continue to inspire millions of young people, from thousands of state schools to reach their full potential.

'This week we moved into our new London home at No. 1 Undershaft in the City of London. We are so incredibly grateful to Amanda Blanc and Aviva for their in-kind donation to Speakers for Schools of 6000 sq ft of amazing space.'' -  Jason Elsom CEO at Speakers for Schools

‘’It was during a Corporate Responsibility away day in York the suggestion of keeping bees was made.’’

Aviva member of staff tending to hive

Our Perth office is the location for a thriving Beehive, the site currently has five bee hives containing up to 300,000 bees, an idea Mags Rowan, Our Business Improvement Consultant and resident Queen Bee turned into action.

‘’We were playing with ideas and a suggestion of having bees was made. I managed to talk two of my fellow Perth Champs into it and we got to work arranging with facilities to have a spot-on site, Health & Safety for the risk assessments and our local Bee Association for the training and advice, as well as our first colony of bees. We even made sure our gardeners were kept safe by supplying them with bee jackets. The rest is history!’’

Bee keepers Mags Rowan, Phil Cooper, and Andy Burns (who is currently in the training phase) plus a team of dedicated volunteers and bees, produced 45 jars of honey this year! All sold to our colleagues, for a minimal donation.

Laura Stewart, our Supply Chain Manager and Honey Marketing Director experienced a bad reaction to being stung as a bee keeper, she now plays a key role the sales & distribution of the honey and managing the bees very own bank account.

The honey is extracted using the local Bee Association’s spinner. There is a 2-stage filtration process that ensures only pure honey, with no tiny wax particles remaining, makes it to the jar. The jars are sourced through the local Bee Association and are fully sterilised before use and the labels are produced by our local mail room.

Colleague donations received for the honey last year allowed the team to be self-sustaining, purchasing syrup and fondant (bee feed), veroa (mites) treatment, and paying for the training of two new bee keepers and their suits.

‘’I am now using my Aviva volunteering hours to support one of our local high schools with getting set up to have hives on site, giving them pointers on what equipment they will need and where to source it, arranging free training with the local Bee Association for three staff members, and also co-ordinating hands on time for the students with bees, ahead of them having any on site. They are planning to add it to the curriculum, helping to educate future generations on the importance of bees.’’

We know how bees are incredibly important to a healthy ecosystem, thank you to Mags Rowan and the team for all your dedication & hard work.

Always striving to do the right thing

Seeing green

As a global insurer with the power to influence, we knew we had to take the lead on climate action. And that’s why we were the very first global insurance group to go carbon neutral. We’ve reduced our C02 emissions by 60% since 2010 and we’re aiming for 70% by 2030.

But in the face of a threat as huge as the current climate emergency, we know that’s not enough. Which is why in 2018, we invested £1.8 billion in wind, solar, biomass and energy efficiency. And we’re proud to say we won the United Nations Momentum for Change award for a decade of reducing our environmental impact.

Defending human rights

We’re people people, and we can’t be ourselves without treating each other right. That’s why we’ve taken steps to make sure everyone within our workforce and supply chains is paid a fair wage, and that their health and rights are respected.

We’ve assessed the ethical recruitment processes, policies and procedures of eight supply chains. We’ve also supported UK government to create new legislation holding businesses to account for human rights abuse, so we can stamp out modern slavery in the UK and around the world.

Putting our money where our mouth is

As long-term investors, we think we owe it to our customers, our colleagues and the world to pay attention to social, environmental and ethical factors. In fact, we were one of the first large asset managers to incorporate these factors into the criteria for roles in our investment team. As individuals and as one united team, we all play our part to make sure we’re funding ethical, sustainable businesses like ours.

In it together

Since we set up our Community Fund in 2009, we’ve supported thousands of causes with millions of pounds of funding, giving charities and do-gooders the chance to make a huge difference to their local communities.

We also give every Aviva employee 21 hours each year to switch their day job for community volunteering. That way, we give back, our colleagues give back, and together we make an even bigger difference.

A new decade welcomes in a new Aviva Community Fund

Through the Aviva Community Fund, we celebrate and support charities doing great work all around UK. We've provided thousands of causes with funding, skills and resources, and we've seen up close just how much of an impact this is having on the lives of the people involved.

Now, we want to have an even bigger and more sustainable impact. That’s why we’ve evolved the way the Aviva Community Fund works, delivering quarterly funding and year-round support.

Get involved

We know that now, more than ever, small charities need our support. That is why the Aviva Community Fund supports applications for projects that enable causes to adapt their vital services and are innovating in this time of need.

Applications are now open for the next round of the Aviva Community Fund until 26th January

https://www.avivacommunityfund.co.uk/start-crowdfunding

What’s changed?

We've evolved the way the Aviva Community Fund works, to back small charities with forward-thinking ideas and to provide even more causes with vital support and resources.

Supporting forward-thinking charities

Over the years we’ve learnt that the charities that make the biggest impact are those that have the chance to innovate and test new ideas. The new Aviva Community Fund programme backs the clever ideas that move communities forward, so together we can build a better tomorrow.

Empowering our employees

We’re also excited to give our employees a much bigger role in how we are supporting charities. By getting them more involved with funding, skills-sharing and volunteering, we’ll not only build stronger communities, we’ll also create deeper connections between us and those communities.

Aviva UK CR team

Congratulations to the Aviva UK CR team for their win at the Better Society Awards 2020.

They won the award for National Commitment to Skills & Training in recognition of all the support they offer charities through the Aviva Community Fund.
